Forty horses racing over 4 ½ miles and jumping thirty fences. Five of the last six winners priced at 25/1 or bigger. The current favourite for Saturday’s big race (5:15pm ITV1) is Total Recall who, at a price of 10/1, has an implied 9% chance of winning the race. Good luck finding the winner.
So, rather than delve deep into the form book or get too bogged down with big race trends, I thought we’d put the cases forward for three selections who would deliver the best good news story with a win:
Baie Des Iles (current price: 16/1)
Ridden by Katie Walsh and trained by Katie’s husband, Ross O’Sullivan, Baie Des Iles is a 7-year-old grey mare and so is bucking every single trend possible in terms of picking out the winner. With Katie again seeking to become the first female jockey to ride the winner in the race, expect more strong support for the grey and even stronger celebrations should she win!
Milansbar (current price: 33/1)
Relative to Katie Walsh’s experience Bryony Frost is the new kid on the block, taking the 2017/18 jumps season by storm with a number of big race wins. Her skill was evident for all to see in guiding Milansbar to victory in Warwick’s Classic Chase back in January, the same race won by One For Arthur on his way to 2017 Grand National success. Her first ride in the race, expect front and back page national headlines in the Sunday papers if Milansbar can get his head in front.
Lord Windermere (current price: 66/1)
A shock winner of the 2014 Cheltenham Gold Cup, Lord Windermere has caused just as much surprise by failing to win a single race in the intervening four years. The 12-year-old does come here fresh and his 7th place finish in the race last year gives his backers some cause for optimism. Will his trainer, Jim Culloty, be celebrating just a second winner in this UK & Irish Jumps Season?
