Sustainability at Wimbledon
2 June 2025
Sustainability is a big part of how we work and what we stand for at AOK Events. We’re all about making choices that are better for the planet, and we love seeing rightsholders and hospitality events doing the same. Whether it’s cutting down waste, using greener materials, or finding creative ways to reduce impact, we’re here to celebrate the people and events leading the way toward a more sustainable future. Next up is Wimbledon, an iconic event that’s proving tradition and sustainability can go hand in hand.
When people think of Wimbledon, they picture strawberries and cream, pristine grass courts, and that unmistakable sense of history. But beyond the timeless charm and world-class tennis, there’s something greener growing beneath the surface. Sustainability at Wimbledon is becoming just as much a part of the story as Centre Court drama, proving that tradition and environmental innovation can go hand in hand.
The All England Club is making bold moves to reduce its environmental footprint and protect the future of the sport. After all, tennis is played under open skies, on carefully maintained turf, and depends on a planet that can sustain all of that. Wimbledon is showing that you don’t have to compromise on prestige to make progress, proving that even the most historic institutions can be powerful players in building a more sustainable future.

What is Wimbledon Doing to be Sustainable?
Waste Reduction and Recycling
Wimbledon has a long-standing commitment to reducing waste, reflecting its dedication to environmental sustainability. Over the years, the tournament has made substantial progress in minimising its environmental footprint. One of the most notable steps has been the significant phasing out of single-use plastics across the entire venue. From food service to merchandise, disposable plastic items have largely been replaced with eco-friendly alternatives.
To further promote sustainability, spectators and staff are encouraged to bring and use reusable water bottles. Refill stations are conveniently located throughout the grounds to support this initiative, reducing reliance on bottled water and lowering overall plastic consumption.
In addition, Wimbledon has implemented a closed-loop recycling system. This means that materials such as paper, cardboard, glass, and certain plastics are sorted and processed on-site or nearby, ensuring they are either recycled or composted rather than ending up in landfills.
Sustainable Sourcing
From food to merchandise, sustainability is at the heart of the procurement process, shaping every decision with environmental responsibility in mind. In the kitchen, ingredients are sourced locally whenever possible, a choice that not only reduces food miles and carbon emissions but also strengthens support for British farmers and producers. Seasonal menus further reflect this commitment, showcasing the best of what local agriculture has to offer throughout the year.
Beyond food, sustainability extends into apparel and retail. Staff uniforms are crafted from recycled or organic materials, combining durability with a reduced environmental footprint.
Similarly, official merchandise is thoughtfully designed with eco-conscious consumers in mind, featuring items made from sustainable fabrics, recyclable packaging, and even upcycled or biodegradable components.
Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency
Wimbledon is increasingly powered by renewable electricity, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. A major component of this transition is the installation of on-site solar panels, which contribute significantly to the tournament’s energy needs by harnessing clean, renewable power directly from the sun.
In addition, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) has upgraded its infrastructure to be more energy-efficient, incorporating advanced systems that reduce overall power consumption and limit greenhouse gas emissions.
The Fans
Wimbledon understands that sustainability isn’t a solo endeavour; it’s a collective responsibility that involves everyone, from organisers and players to fans and partners. That’s why the tournament has integrated sustainability into every aspect of the fan experience.
Visitors are greeted with engaging educational signage that raises awareness about environmental impact, while food stalls offer eco-friendly choices, such as locally sourced ingredients, plant-based options, and compostable packaging. The message is unmistakable: every action, no matter how small, contributes to a greener future. Players, too, are stepping up through initiatives like racket recycling programs and sustainability workshops, making environmental consciousness a key part of the behind-the-scenes culture.
Wimbledon Leading With Purpose
Sustainability at Wimbledon proves that while the tournament may be steeped in tradition, its commitment to the planet is anything but old-fashioned. From eco-conscious courts to global advocacy, Wimbledon is showing how a world-class event can also be a champion for the environment.
The All England Club’s leadership goes well beyond the iconic fortnight. Through community outreach and environmental action, it proves that sport can serve up more than just great tennis; it can inspire real change.
So next time you’re watching Centre Court drama unfold, remember: Wimbledon isn’t just preserving the legacy of the game, it’s helping protect the future of the planet.
