Industry Insights: The Future of Women’s Football Following England’s Success in The UEFA Women’s EURO 2022

16 March 2023

Women’s football has been making giant strides in recent years, with increased media coverage and investment leading to a significant boost in popularity.

The Women’s Super League (WSL), the top tier of women’s football in England, has seen a surge in interest and investment since the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022. The league has secured new broadcast deals and sponsors, and attendance at matches has increased.

This triumph has not only raised the profile of the team and the sport, but it has also encouraged more girls and women to get involved in the game.

According to The FA (The Football Association), the number of girls playing football in England has doubled in the last five years. In 2016, there were around 93,000 registered female players in the country, but that number has now reached over 180,000.

To gain more insight into the rise of women’s football, we spoke with Olli Boot, Account Manager at Club Wembley.

WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT EXPERIENCE OF THE UEFA WOMEN’S EURO 2022 FOR YOU?

“My highlight was watching the Final in a jam-packed pub with my family. There was an overwhelming sense of pride in the air both for our women’s team and our country. I knew this moment would drastically alter the course of female football (and female sports in general) forever”.

COULD YOU EXPLAIN WHAT THE WOMEN’S FINALISSIMA IS?

Finalissima is an international football match organised by UEFA between the South American champions and EURO champions. Historically we’ve only had a Men’s Finalissima but for the first time ever a Women’s Finalissima between England and Brazil will be hosted at Wembley Stadium on April 6th 2023!

IS WOMEN’S FOOTBALL NOW A MORE ATTRACTIVE OPTION FOR AUDIENCES?

“There’s been a big cultural shift in attitudes towards women’s football following England’s success at the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022. The demand for tickets has skyrocketed! To give you an example, more than 40,000 tickets have already sold for the Women’s FA Cup Final taking place at Wembley Stadium on May 14th. We’ve also noticed a rise in the number of supporters who want to enhance their match-day experience by adding on hospitality, especially at these high-profile games”.

The rise of women’s football following England’s success in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players, coaches, and everyone involved in the sport. The increased visibility and investment in women’s football is helping to provide more opportunities for girls and women to get involved and improve their skills.

The success of England’s women’s team has inspired young girls to take up football. The FA reports that 1.6 million girls aged 5-15 are now interested in playing football, compared to just 89,000 in 2013.
